The first two printings (1865- suppressed, only 22 copies known, the last sold at auction in 1998 for $1.5 million, and 1866, generally referred to as the first published edition) consisted of (arguably) 4000 copies this edition was published in December 1866. Carroll recorded in his diaries at the time "by the end of 1867 I hope to be about clear, if not actually in pocket by it." A VG copy of an extremely scarce printing which consisted of only 1000 copies.
