A nice association copy but only fair condition. This story, and two other Christmas pamphlets by the celebrated author of 'Mary Poppins', remained unpublished commercially until 2014, when Virago released them as an edition. "Ah Wong" tells of the narrator's encounter with a swearing Chinese cook.
Madge Burnand, to whom this copy is inscribed, was introduced to P. L. Travers by the poet and editor of the Irish Statesman, George Russell. They initially shared a rented flat and later (1931) moved to a thatched cottage in Sussex where Travers began to write Mary Poppins in 1933. They were together for ten years. Printed dedication 'To These Children for Christmas, Gregg and Susanna Coward,.... and John Camillus Travers', the latter being Travers' own adopted son. One of a pair of identical twins, he was not told of the existence of his sibling until the had a chance encounter in a public house when they were 17 years old. Scarce.
