The set is based on Sir John Tenniel’s original book illustrations and is comprised of Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and the White Rabbit. Each has scrolled supports and name plaques.
While the figures were registered by the Birmingham silversmith Levi and Salaman in 1905 (with the patent number 467555), each figure is clearly hallmarked Birmingham 1906. Presumably Levi and Salaman were aware that 1906 marked the auspicious 50th anniversary of the publication of Alice in Wonderland and produced these delightful table settings to celebrate the occasion.
The tallest character is slightly under 5cm and the diameter of the base is 4cm.
They total 76g of .925 Sterling Silver.
They show occasional signs of wear commensurate with their age but are otherwise a fine and rare set of place settings.
